I love learning; when I was young I wanted to know everything. While I have since realized that is impossible, I am still trying :)
I have an ongoing interest in language as a medium of communication but a barrier to understanding, due to the different connotations a word has in other languages. Understanding each other is the way we see what we all have in common.
I am also interested in the impact of technology on society. The Internet has completely changed the world we live in at a pace never before seen in recorded history. This change is taking place on a global level. A worldwide culture is evolving at unprecedented speeds.
Customs and common myths are another way that we can connect with one another- and learning about other people's cultures, beliefs and customs is a great way to start. It is also an aid to understanding how and why people do things.
I am interested in both non fiction and fiction writing. I read vociferously, with an emphasis on science fiction, but I enjoy other types of fiction as well. I read non fiction on a wide variety of subjects, including current trends in medicine, technology, politics, and culture. I also read history and political philosophy. I tend to thoroughly over-research any subject that catches my attention.
On a personal note:
I live in the city, but want to move to the country. As well as my interests above, I enjoy costuming, crazy quilting, crafts, cooking, gardens, history and historical recreation, traditions and cultures, people, beading, knitting, taking things apart and fitting them back together, Japanese Manga and Anime, and TaeKwonDo. I never have enough time :)
While growing up on an organic subsistence farm, I gained an understanding of the realities of producing food in an environmentally responsible manner, a love of nature, and of the importance of education to understand what happens around me. It was an ongoing lesson in the importance of knowing how to do-it-yourself, and understanding how things worked.
When young I had fun playing one of the world’s earliest video games; an Asteroid game on a circular screen, programed by physicists at a research lab, running off a computer bank that filled an entire room – and was less powerful than the laptop on which I am writing this.
My father is a rocket scientist. It takes one to do things, sometimes.
B.A. in Political Philosophy from St. Lawrence University. Additional courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and EMT training at SCCC. I taught a class in underwater basket weaving.
I have worked at Bright Hub as a freelance managing editor, channel lead, contributing editor and writer since Bright Hub went Public in the summer of 2008. The roles I have had at Bright Hub are ever interesting, as they allow me to edit, write, interact with intelligent and like-minded people and indulge my desire to research – everything. At Bright Hub I have discovered a passion for transparently presenting information in an easy to understand and technically correct manner, both in my own writing and in the editing I do for other people.
Prior to working at Bright Hub I worked at an HMO for years as an Operations Analyst looking at patterns of care, department newsletter editor and assistant to the Director of Operations. I researched, wrote reports, edited and proofed much of the written material produced in the department during this time.
In the past I did additional analysis, research, writing and editing as a consultant, and wrote and published a special interest newsletter. I worked at a book store for four years and wrote a yet unpublished young adult science fiction novel: a learning experience in research, writing and editing.
