About Me

TV Producer and Writer, Camera & Director.

I produce TV and radio programmes in natural history, history and science for the BBC, Discovery, National Geographic and many other network broadcasters. My chief area of expertise is in underwater video work and marine biology. I also write for the BBC Wildlife magazine, Diver and similar popular publications.

I have a wide range of experience in both academic and popular science communication. With a PhD in zoology and neurobiology I am familiar with the rigorous methodology needed for top class research and this has helped me on many occasions in explaining and simplifying detailed scientific concepts e.g. from writing scripts for the World Service Science Unit, as a producer of The Natural History Programme (Radio 4, NPR in UK), as an assistant producer on the children's wildlife series, Really Wild Show (BBC1), as a producer on the BBC marine series, Blue Planet, and more recently interviewing scientists and writing about marine anthropology for a series and feature film on the people of the sea.

Other activities include a media project teaching and filming with students at the Bristol University and leading the underwater workshop at Wildscreen 2008, the bi-annual international wildlife conference in the UK.

I have always had an interest in space exploration and followed Apollo missions 8 through 17 as a child hearing every report I could first hand. I often visit the Jodrell Bank radio telescope in Cheshire and have been lucky enough to make a radio programme with Patrick Moore the famous English astronomer.

We have two children and live in a country village in Gloucestershire, England.

My Experience

Currently I have just finished writing a video and web-based environmental campaign on the oceans, endorsed by major scientific celebrities. In addition I have completed writing a three part TV series on Saudi Arabia, including an extensive research and production strategy revue document for a major Saudi oil company.

Also in 2009 I finished a series called Deep Wreck Mysteries (National Geographic and other co-producers) that combines storytelling, science and historical re-enactment. For example I interviewed WW2 veterans, obtained key WW2 documents including ship’s logs and Enigma encoded intercepts from Bletchley Park (the UK’s wartime code-cracking department). With the resulting research I directed an accurate period drama reconstruction inside the last remaining authentic U boat in Germany.

Programme credits include the Emmy award winning Blue Planet (BBC Natural History Unit) the Human Senses (BBC Science Unit), the Bafta awarded Really Wild Show (CBBC) as well as top rated drama-documentary for Discovery. In addition I have worked with and directed many well known presenters and have a great deal of experience working in difficult environments overseas.
