I've been using, writing about, training other people to use and generally allowing my whole life to be taken over by video production tools since the mid 1970s. Even with an educational film and television production training - gained in Plymouth, England - I pride myself on having been able to see the potential of the new generation of lightweight video-making technology that was challenging the established means of production even then.
During and after my student days I've written and presented TV programming, I've worked as a Cameraman/Editor/Producer for UK cable TV when BBCTV still employed a legion of technicians to do a simple job and I've spent almost 20 years as a freelance corporate/educational video producer here in the new city of Milton Keynes just north of London, England.
I've watched video grow from nothing to the fabulous liberating technology it now is - and thanks to the web anybody can do it and share it worldwide at virtually no cost. I love it!
I have a higher-level Educational Technology (Film and Television) Diploma qualification gained in 1976, I'm an author of over 400 magazine reviews, "how-to" features and articles on digital video and I also currently have three books on Digital Video to my name, in addition to one more as a co-author.
Writing for any medium is what I enjoy the most - it's the one thing I can do on my own at 3.00am if necessary! Over the years, I've written, shot, directed and edited video programming for many blue-chip clients - including names like Volkswagen, Kodak, Xerox, Rover and many more. I've trained media students (both independently and as a New Media Projects Manager with the UK's Open University) in the art of DIY video-making and I've written books designed to support complete newbies.
I'm also an experienced trainer - currently supporting an ongoing media training initiative for The British Library in London, among other projects.
What I'm perhaps most proud of is that I have been running what is arguably the best UK-based website dedicated to helping newbies to shoot, edit and share their digital video clips by whatever means they choose, and that commitment never ends.
The one thing I've been waiting over 30 years for is Video Podcasting and pain-free online video - and that's where I'm directing the bulk of my energy right now, both in support of SimplyDV and commercially.
I'm experienced in using a wide range of hardware and software solutions both for recording and editing video. I'm happy using either PC or Apple Mac systems, though if I'm to be honest I feel much more at home with Apple hardware and software!
