Need to build a custom web application? Do you like features of several different applications? Take what you like from more than one and mix them all into one with Splice, a web mashup tool. Read on to learn more about how this service can help you.

What is Splice?

Splice is a "web mashup" service that allows you to create your own web applications by using splices of others and splicing them together. It helps people who know a good bit about web application development build applications quicker, to increase productivity. If you don't know anything about web application development, using Splice may be a bit confusing for you. Splice will produce programs that will work with both SOAP and REST, and has support for JSON. It is designed for enterprise development, rather than personal development.

How Splice Works

Splice works as "Integration as a Service" which basically means there is no software or anything to download and install on your computer system before you can use it. It also means you don't have to deal with complex database structures and code in order to develop the applications you need. An account is required before you can begin making Splices. Registration is a simple process and requires only a username, password, phone number, first name, last name, and company name. Once you've registered, you can start using the Splice Studio to create your web mashups.

Once you've created your mashup with Studio, you will have to test it before you can publish it. Once you publish it, it goes live on the Splice site for others to browse and clone for use in their splices.

If you are having trouble getting started with your own Splice, you can browse other Splices to clone for your base structure.

Splice Studio

Splice Studio is the application the Splice website runs to build your splices. It has a very easy to use interface to help you build applications in just a few minutes. Choose from Xignite (Splice's parent company) web services, third party web services such as Google Search, and public splices made by other users. Name your splice, test your splice, save it, and it's ready to go. Once you hit publish, the splice is live and available for others to use.
