Blogs are very Web 2.0. Their format allows visitors to comment on a post and the blogger and fellow visitors can reply. Comments and Links are the lifeblood of a blog—coming in and going out. However, it is important to practice good blog comment etiquette when performing a comment campaign.
Comment Campaign
A reply is not always appropriate to all comments, but you should reply whenever possible. This is how you build a personal relationship with your readers.
Commenting on other’s blogs creates goodwill and relationships with fellow bloggers. When done well it also creates a steady stream of traffic.
In order to practice good blog comment etiquette, your comments need to add value to the blog or conversation. “Good post” doesn’t cut it. Some better comments would be more like:“I really enjoyed X about your post.” “I had a similar experience…” “Here’s an idea I had…”
Be consistent in your comment campaign and you will begin to see results over time.
Mastering the Comment!
Here are three hot tips for getting the most traffic out of your comments while practicing proper blog comment etiquette:
1. Frequent and comment on A-list blogs that have a common readership that would be interested in your blog. A-list blogs have a large audience and are well ranked in the search engines. Copyblogger is a good example of a top A list blog.
2. Some blogs have a feature that shows “Top Commenter”. It lists the five people that have left the most comments for that month or week. If you can maintain a “Top Commenter” ranking on an A-list blog that is similar to your blog you can get enough click-throughs to make it as good as, if not better than, a do follow site. This requires daily comments and one or more replies daily (seven days a week) in order to be effective.
3. Posts that are HOT get a large burst of traffic. Join in the conversation and comment on them.
When you hit all three: JACKPOT! You will see an increase in the traffic to your blog. Consistant use of blog comment ettiquette will help your blog to reap traffic rewards over and over again.
