The Settings section is where you will change the settings of WordPress. In this tutorial, I will show you how to navigate through the settings section.

In part two of this tutorial, I will show you how to navigate through your Reading Settings, Discussion Settings, and Privacy Settings. This is part two to the “How to Navigate the WordPress CMS - Settings Section” tutorial. So, let’s pick up where we left off.

Navigating the Reading Section of WordPress

The next section under Settings is the Reading Section. In this section you will setup your reading settings. The first field allows you to choose a static front page or a post front page. Since you are new to WordPress, let me explain a little about static pages and post pages. Static pages is a page that will rarely change. You can use a static page for your home page, to tell what your site is all about. A post page will show a certain number of posts that you have added. Every time you publish a new post, it will show on the front page of WordPress. If you are going to use a static page for your front page, you will first need to create the page. Then tick the Static Page field in the window that you are on now. Drop the box down and select the name of your static page. If you do not wish to use a static page, tick the Your Latest Posts field.

The next part is asking you how many posts do you want to show on a page. Enter the number of your choice in this field. It is also asking the same thing about the RSS feeds, enter a number in that field. The next question wants to know if you want the full article to show or just a piece of it. Tick the field of your choice. You can leave the bottom field as it is and click the Save button.

Navigating the Discussion Section of WordPress

The Discussion Section of WordPress is where you will setup the options for comments, email alerts, and people who post comments. The first section can be left as it is. If you want to be notified by email when someone posts a comment, tick the field in the email section. The other options are pretty self explanatory. Simply read through the questions and answer them how you want. The bottom section is the Avatar section. You can create default avatars for users posting comments on your site. Read through this section and make your choices.

Navigating the Privacy Section of WordPress

In the privacy settings, you have two options; you can choose to make your blog invisible to search engines or you can choose to allow the search engines to see the blog. In the privacy settings, you will need to tick one of the fields and then click the Save Changes button.

Please go to part three of this tutorial to see how to navigate through the last two settings in the Settings section. Part three of this tutorial will cover the Permalinks and Miscellaneous settings.
