The Settings section of WordPress is where you will set up your options for the blog. In this section you will set up your general options, writing options, reading options, discussion options, and more. In this tutorial, I will show you how to navigate through this section of WordPress. Click the Settings link on the right side of your screen and we will begin.
Navigating the General Section of WordPress
The first section in Settings is the General section. In this section you will need to setup your general options like your blog name, blog title, and email. You will need to go through the fields and change them to what you want. All of the fields in this section are pretty self explanatory. So, you shouldn’t have any problems filling in this section. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page to save the changes.
Note: If you plan to customize your header and add your blog name to the header, leave the blog name and blog title blank, because it will write over the header that you customize.
Navigating the Writing Section of WordPress
The next section under Settings is the Writing settings. In this section, you are telling WordPress how to handle the posts and links that you create in WordPress. The first field is the size of your post box. By default, it is set at 10 lines. You can change this to what you want. The next section is the formatting. By default, it tells WordPress to convert smilies. I would leave this as it is. The next part is the Default Post Category. Sometimes when you post a post, you may forget to choose the category. If you forget to choose a category, the post will be automatically placed in the category that you choose in this section. So, drop the box down and select the category of your choice.
The next field is the Default Link Category. This is the same as the above field. If you forget to check a category for the link that you are adding, the link will be automatically placed in the category that you choose here. So, drop the box down and make your selection. If you have not created link categories, you will only have one choice which is the Blog Roll category.
Since you are new to using WordPress, you probably will not be using clients to publish your post, so you can skip the bottom part of the Writing settings. Please continue on to part two of this tutorial to see how to navigate the other settings in WordPress.
