Using web fonts on your web site is fun and can make your web site appealing to others, but only if they can actually see them. Find out when people can't see certain fonts and what you can do about it!
There are many web fonts out on the Internet these days. It's difficult to not want to use nice looking fonts that are not the normal everyday ones people use such as Arial or New Times Roman. However, if you use web fonts that are unique and complex, it may cause more trouble than the worth of its attractiveness.
Common Problems with Web Fonts
One of the most common problems with unique web fonts on your web site is that not everyone may be able to see them. What this means is that people may miss valuable information you have to provide them and if you are an online business owner, you may lose profits. What happens is that if you choose an uninstalled font on some people's browsers, the browser does not know how to read it and will not be able to show it.
Another problem is that some people will change the default settings in their browser including the web fonts they would like to see. If this does not match up with what you have chosen for your web fonts, the person may be unable to see them as well.
A Solution for Unique Web Fonts
If you are desperate and really want to use certain web fonts, you can change the font and make it a graphic. Create what you would like to say on the web page and then save it as an image instead of directly typing it in font. This way, everyone will be able to see it because it has no bearing on installed fonts.
The Problem with Graphic Web Fonts
The only problem with taking web fonts and changing them to graphic images is that the files are much larger than just using plain font. You may not mind because you will only have to upload it to the server each time you make an update on your web site but others who are just browsing the net will not be impressed by the slowness of your site because of the size of your images.
The Worth of Unique Web Fonts
The attraction of using unique web fonts is great but is it worth the risk of people not being able to see them or dealing with slow downloading speeds – probably not. It's safer to use common web fonts and have your web page's layout and colors be attractive than the actual style of font.
