Using Google Advanced Image Search

Google image search is one of the most powerful tools to find an image on the internet. However, there are many features Google offers that many do not utilize. Learn what Google's advanced image search options can do for you!

    Google Advanced Image Search

    Searching for images using Google's Image Search is quite easy. Simply put in a search term and high quality and related results are presented to you. However, if you are looking for a image that needs to meet a specific set of search criteria, a few words in the search bar will not provide you with the results you need. To aid you in your quest, Google Advanced Image Search will allow you to filter out images that do not meet your set of search criteria in order to find exactly it is you are searching for. The easiest part, to use these tools all you have to do is click "Advanced Image Search" which is located to the right of the "Search Images" button.

    What It Can Do For You

    Providing you an assortment of tools, the Advanced Image Search page is simple to use and easy to navigate. Lets go over each tool and learn what each can do for you.

    • Find Results - These search tools refine the way Google searches for images based on its search term
      • related to all of the words
        • Results will include images related to each word of your search term, not a specific part.
      • related to the exact phrase
        • Results will include images only related to the exact search term you enter. This can also be done by placing quotation marks on the ends of the search term.
      • related to any of the words
        • Results will include a broader range of images relating to any of the words in your search term. This is great if you are not getting enough results.
      • not related to the words
        • Provides a way to exclude certain images from your results. Great for when a word can have several meanings.
    • Content Types - These radio buttons allow you to chose what the content of the images will be.
      • Any Content
        • Results will include images with any type of content.
      • News Content
        • Results will include images used by news websites.
      • Faces
        • Results will only include images with a face as the focal point.
      • Photo Content
        • Results will only include images that are actual photos.
      • Clip Art
        • Results will only include images that are clip art and exclude actual photos.
      • Line Drawings
        • Results will only include images of line art like those used with pen or pencil.
    • Size - This drop down menu includes a list of sizes for images from simple words like 'Large' or 'Icon', preset resolutions and actual Mega Pixels.

    • Exact Size - Allows you to enter exact width and height values to find an image to match a certain size you need. It also provide a link that allows you to use your desktop resolution. Great for finding a great desktop background.
    • Aspect Ratio - This drop down menu allows you to find images that fit in specific spaces.

      • Square
      • Wide
      • Panoramic
    • File types - Returns images of a certain image file type. Great for if you can only use a specific image type because of a software issue.

    • Coloration - Returns images based on a color scheme. Great if you want images to match web design or can use color.
      • Any Colors
      • Black & White
      • Full Color
    • Domain - Returns images that are located in a certain domain that you define.
    • Usage Rights - You can find images throughout the internet, however when it comes to using content, modifying it or using it for commercial use, usage rights are something you will have to take into account. A drop down list allows you to search for images that have specific usage rights.
      • Labeled for reuse
        • Results will only include images that are allowed to be reused and modified as the license specifies.
      • Labeled for commercial reuse
        • Results will only include images that are allowed to be reused for commercial use as the license specifies.
      • Labeled for reuse with modification
        • Results will only include images that are allowed to be reused and modified as the license specifies.
      • Labeled for reuse for commercial reuse with modification
        • Results will only include images that are allowed to be reused for commercial use and modification as the license specifies.

    As you can tell, Google offers many tools to aid you in finding the image you need. Equipped with this knowledge, you should be able to fine tune your searching skills and find that exact image you need quicker and more efficiently.
