Flash and JavaScript 3D with Sandy-HX

RSS

I have started a new series that shows you how to get the most out of the new Sandy-HX 3D engine to create Flash and JavaScript 3D applications. This is officially a Chrome Experiment.

You can check out the live online demos here.

IE
Most of the demos are also compiled to Flash, so IE users aren't left completely out in the cold. This is really just a demonstration of what is possible with open standard (or at least what the standards will eventually be).

Chrome
Sorry for being the bad guy here, but people DO use Internet Explorer (well, our users do, around 2/3 of all visitors) and IE has no canvas or SVG on the agenda (IE-Canvas is slow and incomplete) - so I can treat canvas 3d stuff just as an experiment. Like "Chrome experiments" ;(

JavaScript vs Flash
Generally the JavaScript versions are slower and use more CPU. The JavaScript rendering is done by emulating calls to the Haxe Flash library through two additional libraries: neash and nme-canvas. Both of these libraries have not reached version 1.0 yet, and I expect that there will be some performance increase as they mature.

High CPU usage with JavaScript version
It seams that Flash is more optimized for running concurrently with other apps.

Firefox
Opera works too, although I agree that getting the demos to work in Firefox would be nice. Compiling to JavaScript is still experimental, and the Sandy guys do seem to be working on getting Firefox compatibility.

only chrome?
It doesn't work for me in Firefox 3.5. Telling people to just use Chrome is hopefully only a very short-term solution, and Firefox support should be first priority!
