In order for you to be a successful freelance writer you must have a focus. I'm not talking about just focusing on writing, I mean a specific kind of writing and niche. There's a plethora of writing genres out there and niches within each extensive genre. You must choose which you want to do and focus your efforts on that particular genre.
For example, there's fiction writing and within that you could choose children's, young adults, and adults. Next is the choice of mystery, fantasy, historical fiction...there's really quite a lot of choices.
Then there's non fiction writing. You could aspire to write for magazines, newspapers, the web, direct mailers, catalogs, the list is practically endless. Once you choose that then there's more to choose from; health and fitness, all natural healing, computer technology, business to business, fashion writing, this list too is almost endless.
So you see there are so many different types of writers to become. You want to focus in on one area, read, study, and write about this one...give it your all. If you try to do it all or even a few different areas you won't be able to successfully master any one of them.
Once you've mastered the chosen area and become successful then you can start to branch out into another niche you're interested in writing about. Many beginning writers make the mistake of trying to apply for any writing job or project -no matter the genre. They waste their time doing this.
I too used to bid a number of projects in just about any area of interest. Finally I realized this was a waste of time. I choose the area I wanted to write in most and focused on that. My writing for that genre has grown and improved dramatically, I'm able to get more clients because I show success in that same field.
With the goal of being a writer comes the choice of what kind of writer. It may take a little while to be sure what it is you want. Take the time and narrow it down, and then focus in on it. It will pay off in the long run.
