We have trialled some of the gluten free desserts from Silly Yaks, the Australian gluten free food company. Here you will find our comments, ratings and serving ideas for three very different gluten free desserts. Enjoy!
Apple tart would have to be my top pick on the gluten free dessert range from Silly Yaks, although that may have a little to do with the fact that it is the dessert I would be most likely to pick off a menu list anywhere! But seriously, this is a great little dessert find if you are after something simple, hearty and enjoyable that you can heat straight from the freezer. The pastry is just right - not too much of that 'gluten free' flavour and the right balance of pastry to apple filling. Like many of the Silly Yak products, the pastry is there at least in part to remind you that making pastry is hard, hard work when you are trying to do it gluten free, and that there is a definate advantage in leaving it to the experts. I call it a few dollars well spent! There is a light dusting of sugar on the pastry which adds a bit of extra crunch when the tart is heated. Serve it with some cream or a scoop of ice cream. If you're after gluten free apple desserts without the fuss of home baking, this is a great choice.
Note that the addition of dextrose makes this dessert a winner for coeliacs with a fructose malabsorption problem too, so if you need sugar free gluten free desserts, you're in luck!
Pecan tart is one of those desserts you would probably save for special occasions, as opposed to the apple tart that would be great to keep in the freezer as a family dessert. The pecan tart is large enough that it can be cut in half and served to two adults with a scoop of ice cream, or sliced and served on a plate along with some other gluten free pastries. There is a nice golden syrup flavour in the mixture, although I found the texture of the filling was a little unusual. The pastry was a different style to the apple tart - lighter and less of a crunch when served. A good 'sometimes food' option.
For me, the chocolate and raspberry tart was a bit on the rich side, with a strong emphasis on the chocolate and fairly light on raspberries (for those who are chocaholics though, this dessert would probably become a much loved favourite!) The pastry is light and so doesn't detract from the filling, but it really needs to be served with something (ice cream, cream etc) to balance out the chocolate. It would be fabulous if you were going all out to impress at a dinner party with a guest who you knew was a big chocolate fan and could cope with a rich dessert. Definately in the 'sometimes' category!
Cooking gluten free desserts does not need to be a hassle, and with these frozen gluten free desserts at the ready you'll always be prepared for unexpected guests.
