Discusses what active isolated stretching is, how and why it is performed, as well as who it is beneficial for.

What Is Active Isolated Stretching?

AI stretching was developed by Aaron Mattes, a Licensed Massage Therapist and registered Kinesiotherapist. AI stretching involves performing short gentle stretches that last for only 1 ½ to 2 seconds. But is a stretch held for this short amount of time helpful?

In A League Of Its' Own

There are several different types of stretches that a person can perform. They include ballistic, dynamic, static or active isolated. but only one is used by doctors and therapists around the world to help improve the body’s ability to heal itself and increase joint stability. Only Active Isolated (AI) stretching flexibility provides total relaxation of the target muscle which results in a deeper stretch.

Why Acvite Isolated Stretching Works

As the stretch is only held for a short amount of time, the myotatic reflex does not have a chance to kick in. The myotatic reflex is a protective response to a muscle that is being stretched. When a stretch is too intense or held for too long (3 seconds or more), this reflex will cause the muscle that is being stretched to automatically recoil to prevent tearing or other damage. As the myotatic reflex is not activated, the target muscle becomes fully relaxed, allowing for a greater range of motion over time. For example, if one wanted to achieve a deeper stretch in the hamstrings, one would flex the quadriceps for 2 seconds then relax and repeat 10 times. Because the quadriceps is contracted but the myotatic reflex does not have a chance to kick in, the hamstring stays completely relaxed therefore allowing it to achieve a more extreme stretch.

Who Is Active Isolated Stretching Good For?

AI stretching is good for just about any one. It has been used by countless physical therapists to heal soft tissue injuries and irregularities, as well as muscular dysfunctions. Active Isolated Stretching can be very helpful when performed correctly. For more information on how to perform AI stretching properly please log on to the founder’s website: www.stretchingusa.com
