Establishing a sound beginners jogging program involves building your mileage gradually over time with a set goal in mind. Also be sure to pick a cross-training activity and stretch after each workout. Proper nutrition and hydration also are essential.

Determine Realistic Goals

First decide whether you are shooting for distance or speed. For example, do you want to run a 5K or a half marathon? Or are you looking for a high impact cardio workout that builds on speed? Once you set a goal, set aside a 20-minute workout on three nonconsecutive days a week. There are several ways to start your program. You may opt to walk and run in intervals, aiming to trim your time with each workout. You also may decide to pick a distance, and follow your body cues on when you walk or run, aiming in the end to be jogging the whole way. There also are many training programs available that you may choose to follow.

Crosstraining

On two of the days that you aren't jogging, pick a fun activity so that other muscles that aren't being used can get some work. This can include swimming, rollerblading, dancing -- the sky is the limit. They key is to find something enjoyable so you stick to it. Pilates and yoga carry excellent relaxation and muscle toning benefits.

Hydration and Nutrition

While learning your jogging routine, take care to drink plenty of water and abide by a sound nutrition program. The common rule is at least six 8-ounce glasses a day, although you will want to drink more since you are jogging. Be sure not to skip any meals because you need all the fuel you need to stick to the program. As you become more advanced, protein and carbohydrate consumption will become more important than ever.

Gear

You will want to find special running clothes that air out your body sweat while jogging. There are many affordable options for moisture wicking clothing, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. In addition, when training outside be sure to wear sunscreen. Hydration belts, stopwatches, a good pair of sunglasses, and an MP3 player are favorite gear items for jogging enthusiasts.
