Your Health Weapon -- Power Foods

RSS

Welcome to the Diet, Nutrition and Healthy Eating blog.

As you know, what you eat on a daily basis greatly affects your health and how much energy you enjoy.

You probably don't need to be reminded of the old saying that you are what you eat, but there's still a lot of truth to it. However, many of us don't take as seriously as we should what we consume on a daily basis. We forget how our choices will ultimately affect our health. After all, too much junk food can hurt us in the long run and in the short run as well, but healthy food choices can enhance our health.

Eating healthier will take some thought and some adjustments to our daily menus, but the results will be worth it.

Here are four simple suggestions to get us started on our way to healthier eating:

1. Get in the habit of reading labels when you go shopping and avoid products with too many ingredients in them that you can't pronounce.

2. Use honey and other natural sweeteners in recipes in place of white sugar.

3. Instead of eating too much red meat, eat chicken, turkey, fish and soy products instead.

4. Select natural foods and high fiber foods such as nuts, beans, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain cereals, whole grain pastas and grains.

So there you have a few beginning tips about choosing to eat in a healthier way.

By commenting on this blog, you'll help us discover the diet, nutrition and healthy eating topics that are of concern to you so we can provide additional useful tips to help you make wise eating choices.

Take care,

Patricia Wagner

I have tried the substituting honey for white sugar for tea and it tastes better.

Also, it is important to eat whole wheat and try enjoying one meatless meal per week. For example, pizza can be homemade and tastes wonderful.

I hate to admit how long it was that I attended nursing school (1970's), but in nutrition class the watch words were "green leafy vegetables," which holds true still. It's hard to beat the nutrition and fiber in the dark green "leafies."

What a great start on eating healthier! I am very passionate about this subject and i would like to add some tips I"ve learned as a corporate chef for Whole Foods Market and as a private organic chef.

1. When reading labels, look for products sweetened with cane juice and breads made with whole grains rather than enriched flour.
2. An even better sweetner than honey is agave nectar. It is know to keep blood sugars more stabilized than honey and is derived from the agave plant.
3. When purchasing animal based proteins, look for labels that claim the animal was raised "free range". These animals have more access to the outside and build muscles that are more oxygenated. The result is more flavorful and healthy product.
4. When looking for a high fiber food, look for a serving to have at least 5 grams of fiber. Most adults should get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day.

Thanks for starting the conversation about treating your body with care!
