Essential oils are one of the most powerful natural treatments available. Have you ever wondered where to start? Which essential oils have what properties? Learn about the top 3 healing essential oils that you may want to start with, and keep on hand, as well as some great ways to use them.

Alternative health care providers have relied on the healing powers of essential oils for thousands of years, and just recently we are seeing commercial products adding these amazing oils to their list of ingredients. Why is that? Perhaps it is because so many people are turning to alternative medicine for its consistent results; or that essential oils are more powerful than their pharmaceutical counterparts --without the detrimental side effects. Whatever the reason, the word is out that essential oils work. So where do you begin? There are so many essential oils, and each one having unique properties, how do you know what to look for? Described here are the 3 most versatile and useful essential oils a beginner would want to start with, and always keep on hand.

Tea Tree – The Ultimate Germ Fighter

Tea Tree has very potent anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. Use Tea Tree essential oil to successfully treat topical infections, including antibiotic resistant strains of Staphylococcus (MRSA), sinus or bronchial viral or bacterial infections.

So how do you use it? My favorite use is to add 1 drop of Trea Tree, 1 drop of Geranium, and one drop of Eucalyptus (discussed later) into a mug of boiling water and breathe it deep through your nose and mouth – this treatment will kill a viral or bacterial infection in the sinus or throat.

According to a BBC interview with Dr. Warn, of the University of Manchester, "MRSA is often carried in patients' nostrils, and is currently treated by putting disinfectant on the area to kill the bacterium ... Dr Warn says the essential oils could be used to create much more pleasant inhalation therapies - which he said were likely to have a much higher success rate than the current treatment, which is only effective in around 50% of cases." Do this inhalation therapy 3 times a day for 2 days.

Similar to Tea Tree oil, Clove Bud essential oil’s key medicinal properties are analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-neuralgic (pain relief), anti-infectious, and disinfectant. I use Clove Bud as an alternative to Tea Tree, as I have a skin sensitivity to Tea Tree. It is just as effective for most purposes, but I don't have a reaction. Use Clove Bud oil in the same way you would use Tea Tree oil. Also, put some clove on a cotton ball and put it in the closet to keep moths under control. Clove Bud is also used topically for pain relief.
