In most cases, the intent of meditation is to produce a relaxing and calming effect on the mind and body. The benefits of Tantric Meditation go a bit beyond this by stimulating certain sensations and areas of the body involved in sexuality.

Breathing

Tantric breathing techniques are the most esoteric area of Tantra. They do not involve simply sitting still and taking deep and slow breaths. Rather, the steps in Tantra breathing uses specific exercises, movements and sounds related to the kind of breathing required. These types of breathing exercises result in some of the major benefits of tantric meditation. They include a heating up of the body, which leads to heavy sweating, improved blood circulation and a resulting detoxification effect. As a related benefit, the breathing exercises release endorphins, improving your feelings about yourself.

Tantra Yoga

Tantra Yoga goes beyond simple enhancement of bodily sensations. The underlying thrust of this form of Yoga is to expand the practitioner’s awareness of the universe whether they are awake, sleeping or dreaming. Practicing Tantra Yoga gives the user a way to work beyond psychological and bodily problems, creating a sense of peace within the individual. It allows anyone practicing Tantra Yoga to become comfortable with desires, rather than being called upon to renounce them as other spiritual practices do. This is because the basic belief of Tantra Yoga is that desire is the major force that motivates the universe and all life in it.

Interpersonal Communication

Practicing Tantric meditation with a partner in a relationship can improve communication and exchange in-depth feelings about each other, including the possibility of role reversal. In other words, the woman can take on a male role and the male, the female role, allowing each to experience the feelings of the other.

Brain/Body Effects of Tantric Sex

Tantric sexual health supposedly stimulates the brain waves and thereby may reduce migraines and headaches. Increased orgasms allegedly will reduce menstrual cramp severity and the occurrence of urinary tract infections. Men with erectile dysfunction are supposed to find some relief from this condition. Those troubled with joint pain may benefit from improved mobility.

Sexual Therapy

Other benefits of tantric meditation lie in the area of human sexuality and sexual therapy. H. Voigt, in an article published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy in 1991 argued that five exercises drawn from Hindu and Buddhist Tantric traditions could provide “a fertile source for several innovative behavioral assignments useful in sexual counseling” [1].

Tantric Concentration

Contrary to what is generally believed about the relaxation effects of meditation, according to a study by J.C. Corby et al. published in the Archives of General Psychiatry [1] in 1978, in Tantric meditation, “proficient meditators demonstrated increased alpha and theta power, minimal evidence of EEG-defined sleep, and decreased autonomic orienting to external stimulation. This suggests a non-relaxed meditative state for experienced Tantric meditators. Indeed, one meditator characterized the result “as an approach to the Yogic ecstatic state of intense concentration” [2].
