Asthma is a respiratory disorder (mostly due to allergies) that causes the bronchial tubes to become inflamed and swollen and the cells to produce more mucus. The narrowing of the airway and the excess mucus causes difficulties in breathing. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.
Asthma in dogs can occur at any age but the young and middle-aged are most at risk. Dogs with weak immune systems are also highly susceptible. Cigarette smoke, mold, dust, pollen, air pollutants, changes in weather conditions (including temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and strong winds), stress, and certain foods (especially those containing preservatives and other harmful additives) can trigger asthma attacks.
Conventional treatment normally consists of antihistamines, bronchodilators, and steroids. Long-term use of these drugs can cause serious problems like weakening the immune system. If possible, it is best to avoid these medications. Instead, talk with your veterinarian (one who is open to alternative medicine) about natural remedies.
Get rid of airborne irritants, including cigarette smoke and household cleaning products containing harsh chemicals.
Use a air purifier to remove pollen and dust.
Feed your dog a healthy diet. This will exclude dangerous additives and help strengthen their immune system.
Do not overfeed your dog and exercise him or her regularly. Extra weight makes it harder for your dog to breathe.
Echinacea, goldenseal, and astragalus are wonderful herbs to enhance your dog's immune system.
Licorice root has been shown to have cortisol-like activity similar to steroids. It provides asthma relief by decreasing inflammation and eliminating secretions.
Eucalyptus and peppermint can help asthma in dogs by dilating their airway. Add one or both of these oils to the water of a humidifier and place nearby your dog so he or she can inhale the steam.
