Herbs can be very effective in helping common problems in dogs. Learn what herbal remedies for dogs are used when treating arthritis, stress, and more.

Herbal Remedies for Dogs

Herbal remedies are a safe alternative to medications when treating common problems in dogs. When giving herbs to dogs, it is best to make a strong tea or use a tincture. Dogs have a hard time digesting fresh herbs so they should be avoided. Tablets should also be avoided because they are not absorbed very well.

If you do use a tincture, try to buy one without alcohol. If it does contain alcohol, allow the proper dosage to sit in open air for about 15 minutes (so the alcohol can evaporate) before giving.

It is important your dog has a strong immune system, especially when they are fighting off an illness or infection. Echinacea and goldenseal are excellent herbal remedies that can help boost your dog's immune system.

Stomach Problems

Chamomile can treat vomiting, indigestion, and gas.

Ginger is a great herbal remedy for stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gas. It is highly recommended for dogs who have car sickness and can also help dogs with a poor appetite.

Slippery elm soothes inflamed intestines and can help treat diarrhea.

Parsley is high in fiber and can relieve constipation.

Stress and Anxiety

Chamomile and valerian are effective herbal remedies for dogs when calming nerves.

Itchy Skin

For small patches of itchy skin, rub a little aloe or tea tree oil on the affected area.

To treat larger areas, prepare a strong cup of peppermint tea (rosemary or pennyroyal). Dilute it with warm water, saturate your dog's coat with it, and let it air dry.

Arthritis

Licorice root has anti-inflammatory properties and is similar to cortisone. It helps reduce swelling caused by arthritis.

Other herbal remedies to treat arthritis in dogs include alfalfa and parsley.

Cuts

Make a strong cup of goldenseal tea and use it to wash the cut. Afterwards, apply fresh aloe juice (a natural antiseptic).

Eyes

Make a strong cup of eyebright tea and use it as an eyewash to treat irritated and inflamed eyes. Eyebright can also help your dog's eyes when taken internally.

Before using herbal remedies for dogs, it is best to consult with your veterinarian.
