Signs of meningitis differ in young and older children. Learn what they are and find natural remedies that can be used during the recovery period to strengthen your child's body.

Meningitis in Children

Meningitis is a potentially fatal disease. It is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (encephalitis is inflammation of the brain only).

Bacterial meningitis can be caused by any of a variety of bacterial agents. It is almost always preceded by an upper respiratory infection.

Nonbacterial meningitis is caused by a number of agents, principally viruses, and is frequently associated with other diseases, mostly enteroviruses (a virus in the gastrointestinal tract) and mumps.

Signs of Meningitis

Signs in nonbacterial meningitis are similar to bacterial meningitis but are not as severe.

Signs of meningitis in young children include:

  • fever or low temperature
  • irritability
  • drowsiness
  • poor feeding
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • respiratory irregularities
  • high-pitched cry
  • bulging fontanel
  • seizures.

Signs of meningitis in older children include:

  • high fever
  • severe headache
  • vomiting
  • neck pain/stiffness
  • back pain
  • confusion
  • sleepiness
  • irritability
  • no appetite
  • sensitivity to light
  • intolerance to loud noises
  • unusual body positions
  • seizures.

Treating Meningitis

As mentioned above, meningitis requires immediate medical attention. Bacterial meningitis is primarily treated with antibiotics. Viral meningitis (once bacteria has been ruled out) normally requires only supportive therapy and some mild cases can be treated at home.

Bacterial meningitis, if untreated, is almost always fatal. Viral meningitis typically resolves on its own and is rarely fatal.

Rest and fluids are especially important during the first few days.

Natural remedies for meningitis in children may be used (if approved by your health care provider) when your child is in the recovery phase.

The following can help strengthen your child's body:

  • vitamin C (boosts the immune system and increases energy - orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C)
  • echinacea (boosts the immune system)
  • chamomile (promotes sleep and can soothe an upset stomach).
