Herbal remedies are ideal for rabbits. Normally they respond well and rapidly when being treated with herbs for a number of problems.
Immune System
The best way to prevent (and treat) many problems is maintaining a healthy immune system.
Echinacea (E. purpurea) can be given on a regular basis throughout your rabbit's life to balance the immune system. It is best to give 5 days and skip 2 days. Mix the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers and add to their food.
Intestinal Tract
Dandelion is very nutritious for rabbits. It can help both constipation and diarrhea. Apples, rich in pectin, also have the same effect.
Other herbal remedies for rabbits with constipation include parsley and borage.
Other herbs used to treat diarrhea include thyme and bilberry.
Ginger helps treat diarrhea and nausea in rabbits.
Pumpkin seeds and garlic can help rid intestinal parasites.
Urinary Tract
Dandelion root acts as a diuretic and often helps cure bladder infections in rabbits. Other herbal remedies include Oregon grape root, goldenseal, and uva ursi.
Pain
Willow bark contains salicin and can help relieve all types of pain. Licorice root has anti-inflammatory properties and can help pain associated with arthritis. Devil's claw, feverfew, and yucca can also help arthritis pain in rabbits.
Eyes
Eyebright tea, meadowsweet tea, and basil tea are herbal remedies for rabbits to help treat sore and inflamed eyes. Use as an eyewash after the tea cools down.
Mites
To treat ear mites in rabbits, add 3-4 drops of tea tree oil to 1 tablespoon of olive oil, mix, put a few drops in the ear, and gently massage the ear. Do this once every day or two.
Skin
Lavender oil (mixed with a carrier oil) can be applied externally to treat skin conditions, such as insect bites and stings, sores, and wounds.
Fleas
Herbal remedies for rabbits with fleas include bay leaf, eucalyptus, sage, and sassafrass. These herbs should be dried and applied like a powder. You can also sprinkle one of these herbs on their surroundings to repel fleas.
