Cause of Hiccups

Getting Rid of HiccupsHiccups are involuntary contractions (spasms) of the diaphragm. Although they normally go away on their own after a few minutes, there have been cases where they will last for days or even years. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Charles Osborne had an attack of hiccups from 1922 to 1990.

The exact cause of hiccups is unknown. They often occur after swallowing air, drinking alcohol or carbonated beverages, eating too fast, eating too much, and eating hot and spicy foods.

• Breathe into a paper bag.

• Gently inhale some pepper to make you sneeze a couple of times.

• Fill a glass full of water and drink from it from the opposite (far) side of the glass. To prevent dribbling all over yourself, you will have to bend far forward which will help get rid of hiccups.

• Eat a spoonful or two of peanut butter.

• Slice a lemon in half, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt on one of the halves, and suck the juice from it.

• Add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in 1/2 glass of water. Drink slowly.

• Take a mouthful of water, hold it in your mouth, and plug your ears with your middle fingers. Count to 100, swallow the water, then unplug your ears.

• Gargle with lukewarm water to get rid of hiccups.

• Place your index finger under your nose, like a mustache, and press firmly for 30 seconds.

• Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of warm water and drink it quickly.

• Soak a sugar cube in fresh lemon juice, place it in your mouth, and let it dissolve.

• Suck on a small piece of ginger or some crushed ice. Both can help in getting rid of hiccups.

• Swallow 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed onion juice.
