Caprylic acid is found primarily in coconut oil, and is commonly recommended as an effective remedy for yeast infections and candida. Does it fulfill the promise of those who tout its benefits?

Caprylic acid is also known as octanoic acid, an 8-carbon medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) found in coconut oil, human and cow's milk, and palm kernel oil. Most fatty acids obtained through diet are the long-chained version, rather than the more healthful medium-chained variety.

In the 1960s coconut oil's ability to prevent food spoilage and kill disease-causing micro-organisms was discovered. More recently caprylic acid has gained popularity as a natural remedy to combat fungal and yeast infections and systemic candida. Candida and other yeasts are responsible for vaginal yeast infections, athlete's foot, and jock itch.

According to naturopath Bruce Fife, it is the most effective antifungal remedy, as effective for yeast infections as prescription antifungal medications without the side effects. Its antifungal properties have been demonstrated both in vitro and in clinical settings. It may act by dissolving the yeast cell membrane.

Caprylic acid is available in capsule or tablet form, either by itself or in a formula with herbs such as pau d'arco and garlic. The typical daily dosage ranges from about 300 mg to about 1200 mg. Experts caution that because it is absorbed so quickly, users should look for sustained-release or enteric-coated versions, to ensure that the active ingredient reaches the intestines where it can begin acting. Some proponents of caprylic acid as a natural remedy also recommend that capsules containing liquid caprylic acid be used rather than tablets, especially as the tablet version is often from a dairy source.

Another option is to consume coconut oil directly to obtain caprylic acid, both for treating candida and yeast infections and for prevention. Caprylic acid and the other MCFAs in coconut oil demonstrate effectiveness against viral infections such as flu, herpes and hepatitis C and against bacterial infections such as sinusitis, gonorrhea and urinary tract infections.

Cautions:

Avoid caprylic acid if you are pregnant or nursing or are experiencing diarrhea or upset stomach. Do not use for children.
