Hemorrhoids are both painful and embarrassing to talk about. Fortunately, there are several home remedies that can ease the symptoms and prevent recurrence. Might be worth a try!

Why are Hemorrhoids Such a Hassle?

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus that cause pain, itching, bleeding and immense discomfort. To make things worse, people are often embarrassed to talk about them or seek medical help. Hemorrhoids are usually aggravated by pregnancy, old age and frequent bouts of constipation. OTC ointments sometimes help in providing instant relief but they do little to curb the occurrence of hemorrhoids and even cause skin irritation over a period of time. Fortunately, there are several home remedies to the rescue.

Temperature Therapy

Squat in a tub filled with warm water and ensure that the anal area is exposed to the water. The warmth will improve blood flow and shrink the swollen veins thus easing the pain.

Epsom salts dissolved in bath water also help constrict the blood vessels.

In case of external hemorrhoids, a warm compress with a wet tea bag onto the anal area can help reduce pain and swelling.

Wrap a plastic bag filled with ice, wrap it in a clean cloth and sit on it for a while. The cold constricts the blood vessels and provides instant pain relief.

It is advisable to switch between hot and cold treatments.

Physical Aspects

Hemorrhoids are usually aggravated by prolonged sitting. Take frequent breaks and lie down on a bed or sofa with your feet raised up. This boosts circulation in the anal area and relieves the pressure off the area.

If your work involves sitting at one place for several hours, use a doughnut shaped cushion underneath. This will take the weight off the anal area and relieve the pressure exerted by the hard surface of the chair.

Take frequent walks to enhance blood circulation.

Avoid squats and heavy weights in the gym as these exert direct pressure onto the anal area.

Nutrition and Lifestyle

Eat foods rich in fiber to avoid constipation as it is likely to aggravate symptoms. For the same reason, drink plenty of water and regulate your bowel movements.

Use white unscented toilet paper instead of the perfumed ones as the later can further irritate the skin. After every wipe, lubricate the area with any moisturizer meant for sensitive skin.
