Sunscreens with chemicals can be just as dangerous as UV rays. A natural sunscreen is preferred for sun protection but learn why there are some concerns for its safety.

Natural Sunscreen

When the number of people using sunscreens began to rise (after realizing the dangers of UV rays), so did the incidents of skin cancer.

Sunscreens with chemicals in it work by absorbing UV rays. These chemicals can generate free radicals which can promote the growth of cancer cells. It also has an estrogen effect which may raise the risk of ovarian and breast cancer.

Natural sunscreens that meet the safety criteria for sun protection contain minerals, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and work by reflecting the UV rays. When applied, these minerals leave a visible white residue on the skin which many consumers prefer not to use. To increase sales, manufacturers began using nanotechnology (forming minute particles), making the sunscreen clear in appearance. A natural sunscreen with nanoparticles has the potential of generating free radicals and there are some concerns about its safety.

If you have to be out in the sun, it is best to cover your skin with clothing. This is the safest sun protection but if you have to wear a sunscreen, a natural sunscreen appears to have the least potential of toxicity. You will want to choose a product that also contains natural additives such as aloe vera, shea butter, green tea, or lavender to help counteract free radical damage.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology:

Use a sunscreen that can protect you from UVA and UVB rays.

The higher the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of the sunscreen, the better the protection.

A minimum of SPF 30 is recommended for prolonged sun exposure (20 minutes or longer). Fair-skinned people should use a sunscreen with an SPF 50 or higher.

Even though dark-skinned people don't burn easily, it is still important to wear a sunscreen.

Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours. If swimming or exercising, it should be reapplied more frequently for sun protection.
