Do you know the health benefits of lecithin? Do you know it may help you lose weight, lower your cholesterol, or help your liver perform better? Do you know what foods contain lecithin? Do you know lecithin already comes in some foods you love such as chocolate? Learn more about lecithin.

Have you heard of lecithin? Do you know what it is? Do you know what types of health benefits you can get from eating foods that are enriched with lecithin or by taking lecithin supplements?

Lecithin looks yellowish or brownish and can be found in the fatty tissues of plant and animal tissues, as well as egg yolk. It is often used as a food supplement.

One of the most popular types of lecithin used is soy lecithin. Of course, soy lecithin is derived from regular soybeans. This process takes about ten days. The soybeans are cracked and the oil is removed. The lecithin itself is found within the oil and separated from it.

Lecithin is not considered a major nutrient that we need. But there are still surprising health benefits of lecithin such as fighting cholesterol, helping one to lose weight, supporting liver health.

Lecithin may help one to fight cholesterol because it helps to breakdown the particles of cholesterol that can build up within the arteries. It can also aid the liver in breaking down fat particles by dispersing these particles in water. These are the same reasons why it may help one to lose weight by breaking down fat particles before the body turns them into fat pockets.

Some doctors even believe that lecithin can help in the treatment of such diseases as Alzheimer's, dementia and amnesia because of the way it helps cells to facilitate cellular regulation.

Lecithin supplements can be bought at most drug stores or nutritional stores. They also come in a variety of forms from powders to granules and of course, pill forms. There is no recommended daily dosage for lecithin.

Lecithin can be found naturally in such foods as cabbage, soybeans, corn, liver, eggs, fish, cauliflower and many other fresh foods. It can also be used as an additive in foods like margarine, chocolate bars, and even ice cream.

Since lecithin supplements are easy to find and lecithin is also easy to find in many of the foods you may all ready like, why not be a little more diligent in adding it to your diet? You may be surprised at the health benefits it offers you.

Soon more will be known about lecithin since many medical studies are currently being done on lecithin to find out what other health benefits it may have. Lecithin/choline
Lecithin was extensively studied by Central Soya to apply to FDA for vitamin status of its choline content. Lecithin is the most absorbable form of choline. FDA approved the designation of choline as a vitamin. The American diet does not provide adequate choline. The two good sources of dietary choline, liver and egg yolks, are not popular. Minimum daily requirement of choline is provided by two egg yolks, quarter pound of liver, or two tablespoons of granular lecithin

Lecithin is essential for making cell membranes in one for one pairing with cholesterol. Lack of healthy cell membranes can lead to unhealthy membrane function, the hallmark of diseases such as Alzheimers, heart disease, and stroke. Without sufficient lecithin to pair with cholesterol the cholesterol accumulates in the blood and precipitates as gooey slime we call plaque.

Lecithin promotes transport and deposition of fats and cholesterol. One test on a gorilla showed that lecithin can prevent alcoholic sclerosis of the liver. The gorilla ate lecithin supplements along with force fed alcohol. No signs of sclerosis of the liver were evident when the gorilla was sacrificed.

Lecithin is immediately effective. When a solution of lecithin is rubbed on bare skin it absorbs and depletes blood cholesterol levels within minutes.

Lecithin or choline is an important vitamin for brain function. Nerve tissue depends upon healthy membranes. Leakage of internal cell proteins through unhealthy membranes into extracellular space is the hallmark of Alzheimers memory loss. Choline is necessary for production of acetyl choline, a neurotransmitter important for memory.

One study by Central Soya showed that lecithin supplements during weeks 4-8 of gestation improved lifetime rat maze memory ability to the genius level. The effect was traced to development of the brain's memory organ called the hippocampus. By contrast the degeneration of the hippocampus results in memory loss.
