Since ancient times, honeybees have always been viewed as golden colored creatures responsible for stealing pollen and nectar from flowers to create honey. These bees are at the center of apitherapy. The benefits of apitherapy foods and bee pollen are reaped from the hard work of these bees.

Medicinal Products

Unknown to many people other products apart from honey have been used for medical purposes since ancient times. Royal jelly is one of these products used by ancient Egyptians to keep the skin young and soft as a way of fighting the effects of aging on the skin. This method of skin treatment is known as apitherapy.

Components of Apitherapy

Apitherapy is the use of honeybee products for medical purposes. Most of the products commonly used in this therapy include honey, royal jelly, pollen, bee venom and propolis. Since ancient times healing properties of most bee products especially honey have been attributed mostly to the nutritional benefits that come as a result of consuming bee products. Though there are many types of flying insects that are known to produce venomous stings, the honeybee is the one mostly used for treatment since it is easier to raise and domesticate.

Conditions Treated by Apitherapy

The study of apitherapy has not been based on scientific standards that apply evidence-based medicine but the claims of this form of healing are anecdotal. This form of therapy has been known to treat a variety of diseases and conditions with the most popular being multiple sclerosis and autoimmune diseases that are treated using bee venom. Apitherapy is effective in treating topical ulcers, eczema, psoriasis, degranulating wounds, warts and corns. Additionally Mastitis and laryngitis are treatable. Viral diseases such as warts and shingles are also treatable by this technique. Apitherapy is also used in orthopedic to stimulate bone healing, psychological to treat mood swings and depression and endocrine purposes to treat reduced blood sugar, irregular periods, PMS and menstrual cramps.
