Fighting Machine
Your body is a well-equipped fighting machine. If you give your body the proper protective gear, it will be able to ward off any unwanted attackers with efficiency...including that dreaded winter cold. The trick to fighting your cold naturally is to take the time to help your body win the battle.
All of you workaholics out there may not want to hear this, but you must take some time off to allow your body to rest. This means calling in sick from work and curling up on the couch with a nice, warm, blanket. If you can’t detach from the outside world completely, at least bring your laptop to the couch with you...
The next course of action (you probably already know this one) is to drink plenty of water. How much water? Well, begin with the standard eight glasses per day, and work your way up from there (sip slowly). As soon as you are resting and sipping, think about whether or not you feel like eating something.
Your body will tell you when it is hungry. So, make sure to eat if you feel like munching. If not, try and eat something small that is easy to keep in your stomach. Sorry – sweets and take-out foods are not the way to help your body fight a cold (think fruits and veggies packed with Vitamin C instead).
Finally, take your mother’s advise...indulge in a steaming bowl of chicken (or mock-chicken) soup. There might not be any scientific reason as to why soup helps, but it sure is soothing when you have an empty stomach and a sore throat, isn’t it?
What about the Flu?
Numerous people have numerous opinions regarding the proper way to fight the flu. Whether or not you decide to take a doctor prescribed medication is up to you, but you still to help your body when it comes to the flu-ridden battlefield.
Almost all of the things that will help keep that cold at bay will work with the flu too. The major difference is that you shouldn’t force yourself to eat if you feel nauseous. In addition, you may want to plug in a humidifier in order to keep the air nice and moist.
Invest in a good winter blanket for those days when you are feeling under the weather. It’s surprising how much difference a comfortable bed, the right foods, and plenty of sleep makes when it’s cold and flu time.
