Windows NT is a range of operating systems created by Microsoft. The first release was Windows NT 3.1 in 1993, followed by Windows NT 3.5 and NT 4.0. Subsequent versions of Windows such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 have dropped the NT name, but are based on the same technology.
Windows NT marked the move from a hybrid 16/32 bit platform, as was employed in Windows 95, 98 and ME, to a fully 32 bit platform. Recent versions of Windows now also support 64 bit CPUs.
