Wikimedia Commons is an online file repository launched in September 2004 that provides access to a huge collection of localised images, sounds and video clips. It contains over 8 million public domain and freely-licensed files, which can be used directly in sites such as Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikinews, or downloaded and used off site.
Wikimedia Commons differs from other media repositories such as Flickr, PicacaWeb and DeviantArt in that it's primary goal is to provide a common repository for other Wikimedia websites, rather than hosting images such as personal photos or individual creative works.
