USB, which stands for Universal Serial Bus, is a technology that was designed to provide a fast, simple and reliable way to connect devices. USB was introduced in 1996, and has since become the standard method of connecting devices such as mice, keyboards, memory sticks and external hard drives.
There are many different kinds of USB connectors, referred to as Standard, Mini, and Micro, which allow USB connection points to be included in smaller devices like smartphones. These connection types are not physically compatible with each other, so you can't plug a standard USB cable into a micro USB connection point.
