The U.S. Army was established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The Army is the main force on the ground, charged with protecting and defending the United States. To carry out this task, members of the Army have tanks, armored fighting vehicles, helicopters, artillery, air defense and tactical nuclear weapons. With approximately 76,000 active duty officers and 401,000 active duty enlisted members, the Army is the largest of all the military services.
The U.S. Army has fought honorably, beginning with the war for independence, during the Civil War, WW I, WW II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, Desert Shield and Desert Storm and the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq.
You can enlist in the U.S. Army, provided you meet certain requirements. The Army provides medical and dental care, housing and a food allowance.
