helped an NPC character and when you next see them, they're wearing new digs. Or maybe you finished the game with one character and discovered that new one has shown in your character list.
Video games are notorious for giving players bonus material when they've done something throughout the game, whether it be finish it completely with a particular character or completing it on a certain level, these types of unlockable content makes reaching the end of a game or helping certain characters that all the more fun.
