Unix is an operating system originally created by a group of AT&T employees, which has since been reimplemented in a number of operating systems including Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and Mac OS X. Unix is a trademark, and only operating systems compliant with and certified according to the Single UNIX Specification can use the term. However there are many Unix-like operating systems including Linux and FreeBSD.
