Message from the Editor:
The University of Massachusetts is my alma mater. UMass Amherst is the flagship campus, where, through the University Without Walls program, I earned my bachelor's degree after thirty years of on again, off again matriculation. This is also where I finished my M. Ed. in Reading and Writing.

From Traditional to Cutting Edge: the University of Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts sprang from humble beginnings as an agricultural college in the mid-nineteenth century. Today, five campuses, located at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (the flagship campus), Worcester, Dartmouth, Lowell, and Boston, offer an array of studies. Gifted and award winning scholars claim roots in UMass, many returning to teach what they love best alongside peers from other institutions. Excellence in learning is evident in some of the most recent kudos, which helps illustrate the wealth of learning found in the university.

For example, among the prestigious alumni of the Amherst campus are Jeff Corwin, host of the Animal Plant; blues muscian,Taj Mahal; Jill Carroll, correspondent; and Dr. Bill Cosby, all of whom have distinguished themselves in their fields. In addition, Dr. Craig Mello, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School at the Worcester campus received the Nobel Prize for Medicine. At the Dartmouth Campus, alumnus Jeffrey Schoonover received the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by President Obama. Of equal note, experts on environmental issues from the Lowell campus, advised workers at the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico; and Vice Chancellor Charlie Titus along with Professor Jemadari Kamara, both from the Boston campus, traveled to Africa to facilitate basketball clinics for coaches and students as part of the Youth Education and Sports initiative created by them.
