Tsunamis are giant tidal waves or a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or underwater explosions. Such waves usually contain immense volumes of water and energy that has the potential to devastate coastal regions. Tsunamis of small magnitudes are a frequent occurrence, especially in Japan. The last major occurrence was the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
