Computer Guide to Temporary Files

Temporary files are required by programs to function properly. Usually these files are created by a program in the course of its work and destroyed afterwards but sometimes this is not the case. Most likely you have encountered many temporary files on your computer. These files are (basically) harmless, but they clutter your hard drive and this is why you should clean them from time to time.

However, cleaning temporary files isn't always possible. For instance, if the program still holds a file under lock, you won't be able to delete this file. Also, there are many cases when it looks harmless to delete temporary files, but in fact, it isn't and if you do it, you can damage your system. You do need to know how to treat temporary files. Read the advice in this guide and you will be more knowledgeable.
