SUN Microsystems was founded by three students of Stanford University Network: Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy, and Andy Bechtolsheim. The initials of Stanford University Network were picked up to name the venture and hence the name SUN. The venture was initially into offering computer components, software, and other IT services. It was later acquired by Oracle Corporation in Jan, 2010.
As of now, the main products of the company include computer servers; SPARC based Workstations; and a wide range of software products that include the famous Solaris operating system.
