The stuffed animal is probably first given as a gift to a newborn or to a baby soon to be born. This toy decorates the bedrooms of infants, small children and children of all ages--into adulthood.
The first stuffed animals were produced by Steiff, the German toy company in the 19th century. During the WWII years, production, especially from Germany, fell. English toy companies began producing stuffed toys, particularly dogs, cats, elephants and monkeys.
The stuffed animal has made its way into at least two popular cartoons--"Winnie the Pooh" and "Calvin and Hobbes," as a reflection of their popularity. Children, who so adore these “lovies,” carry them along, bouncing behind them, accepting love, dirt, wear and tear. To learn more about stuffed animals, read our Bright Hub guides.
