Serial Ports are interfaces used to transfer data between computers and other devices. Devices like mice and modems were traditionally connected to a PC via a serial port. However serial ports have largely been replaced by USB, Firewire and Bluetooth, and most modern PCs no longer provide a built-in serial port.
Despite having been superseded by newer technologies, serial ports are still commonly used as a secondary method for configuring devices like switches, modems and UPSs. Commonly a USB to serial port adapter is used to connect modern PCs to these devices. Serial Ports can also be added to a PC using PCI or PCI Express cards.
