Risk factors are unique situations or life choices that increase the risk of contracting a disease, becoming ill or being injured. Certain risk factors are based on life decisions or vices, such as smoking, drinking, or playing full contact sports. Environment and unforeseen risks can also increase a person's chances of suffering, but these are often uncontrollable and sometimes invisible.

Learning more about how choices and changes can affect overall health is an important first step in tacking control of personal well-being. Some activities in life are evidently linked to illness or disease while others are not as evident.
