What is a proxy server? The origin of proxy servers is a computer which fetches web requests on behalf of you for faster load times. Sometimes the web content is cached to save bandwidth. More recently proxy servers are also being used to bypass web filters in school and at the workplace. Colleges and employers sometimes block FaceBook, YouTube and Gmail for example so that computers at these places can only be used for "appropriate" purposes. Also, certain countries filter out web sites which they think are bad for their citizens. The success rate and use of these filters is steadily increasing, but the proxy server webmasters do not sleep either.
