The Toyota Prius was amongst the first hybrid electric vehicles to be mass produced. The Prius first went on sale in Japan in 1997, and worldwide several million vehicles have been sold. The Prius is designed to produce low emissions, and has been classified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle by the California Air Resources Board. The reception has not all been positive though, with Toyota being criticized recently for a software issue that can cause the Prius to accelerate unexpectedly.
