A Special Guide to Mother's Day

manos1 r-1Celebrating motherhood dates back to ancient civilizations and we still celebrate it today. Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May - a day devoted to honoring mothers here in the United States. Anna M. Jarvis is recognized as the founder of this holiday, when she suggested in 1908 that a special service be held for mothers in a Philadelphia church. She began a nationwide campaign for the observance of Mother's Day by writing letters and persuading influential people. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring Mother's Day as a national observance. Many people follow the tradition of wearing a carnation - a colored flower indicates that one's mother is living and a white carnation indicates the mother is deceased. Cards and gifts are given to mothers to show love and appreciation. Our expert Bright Hub writers have touched on many aspects of this holiday with their articles.
