Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May - a day devoted to honoring mothers here in the United States. Anna M. Jarvis is recognized as the founder of this holiday, when she suggested in 1908 that a special service be held for mothers in a Philadelphia church. She began a nationwide campaign for the observance of Mother's Day by writing letters and persuading influential people. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring Mother's Day as a national observance. Many people follow the tradition of wearing a carnation - a colored flower indicates that one's mother is living and a white carnation indicates the mother is deceased.
