Guide to MAC Address

Each Network Interface Card is assigned a hard-coded unique identifier called MAC address. The Media Access Control address is used by the Ethernet network topology for broadcasting purposes such as when obtaining a DHCP lease for example.

The IEEE 802 standard specifies the MAC address as six pairs of hexadecimal digits, e.g. 00-21-9B-D4-6E-F8, so the address space is sufficient for 2h48 potential network cards which is expected to last until the next century at the least. In addition to the original MAC-48 specification, EUI-48, and EUI-64 coexists such as for devices similar to network cards and the IPv6 protocol.
