The Internet is a packet-switching network making use of the IP protocol in which each node or computer must have its unique address so that the information is received by the intended recipient. This address is called the IP address.
The IP address version 4 consists of four octets with values between 0 and 255 separated by dots, e.g. 192.168.1.1. Due to the shortage of IPv4 addresses and to provide for future expansions of the World Wide Web IP protocol version 6 using 128-bit addresses compared to IPv4 32-bit addresses has been specified, yet the standard has not been widely adopted so far.
