Insects of the World

Diversity of Insects Ants. Flies. Bees and wasps. Grasshoppers, butterflies, beetles and all sorts of other bugs that creep and crawl, hop or fly. Insects are a varied lot, but they do have a few things in common. Each has a three-part body - head, thorax, and abdomen - with six legs attached to the thorax. Many have wings; insects are one of the few taxonomic groups that have evolved flight, which is partly how there got to be so many of them: over a million species described by science with at least three more million not yet documented, making them nearly two thirds of all known species of living things. Entomologists (the people who study insects) classify them in about 30 orders within Class Insecta, Phylum Arthropoda, Kingdom Animalia.
