Genevieve Van Wyden worked with Child Protective Services clients who, while they got up every day and worked, they were not “healthy.” Emotionally, mentally and physically, these persons had something going on that made a healthy life a distant goal. Van Wyden wants readers to know “health.”

What is Good Health? A Guide

Woman and Apple FDP Credit Luigi Diamanti“Health” is more than your physical state--it is also the totality of your social, emotional and mental well being. The World Health Organization has defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Healthy individuals are healthy because they take care of the bodies they have. They eat the right foods, restrict their intake of salty, fatty and overly sugary foods; they exercise several times a week. These people realize that, in order to be healthy and feel good a majority of the time, they have to take care of themselves. While they allow an occasional indulgence, such as a favorite sweet or alcoholic drink, they don’t eat or drink too much. In the same way, they allow themselves an occasional “slide” in their weekly workout routines. If they are busy or life gets in the way once in a while, they can miss a workout.

Good mental health means having the emotional and mental resilience to come back from a bad situation; it also means being flexible enough to bend, but not break during rough, stressful times and making the best of your situation. If you are experiencing rough times financially, but you are still able to find something good in your life, it is likely you enjoy good mental health.
