Guide to GNU and Linux

GPL LogoThe GNU General Public License is one of the most widely used free software licenses. It was originally written by Richard Stallman as part of the GNU project. Its basic premise is that the source code used in free software will remain free, preventing exploitation by commercial interests without giving anything back to the community. The Linux kernel is probably the most famous piece of software distributed under the GPL. In addition to Linux, there are many thousands of applications that have been released under the GPL, with many being hosted on sites such as SourceForge and FreshMeat.
