The Food Guide Pyramid is a guideline of foods to eat that helps you make healthier choices, based on your body’s needs. To stay healthy, you need to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, complex carbohydrates, dairy and lean meats.
You can continue to enjoy snacks and healthy fats, but eat them in moderation so you don’t put on unneeded weight or run the risk of developing high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Ideally, you should get most of your day’s nutrients from whole-grain breads, cereals, rices and pastas; aim for three to five servings of vegetables and fruits. Choose lean cooked meat, poultry or fish, dry beans or peanut butter. From the dairy category, you should take three servings daily.
